Those of you that run know that running is 90% mental, 10% physical. Well here is a classic Papa Henshaw story for you.
Last night, after I got home from the Owls game with some co workers, my dad, Nate and I sat on the back porch talking about our days.
I said “Dad do you want to run on that new path we found the other day?”
Dad “of course it’s about 4 miles right?”
I said “yes that will be good for the morning. I have to work at nine. Let’s go at 6 so I can come back and get ready.”
Dad “see you at six ready to go.”
***Mentally I was ready for four miles when I went to bed.
This morning: I was in the truck by 6:15 a little late…. Oops. As we are driving to this new path we found
Dad said “ are you paying attention so you know how to get her for next time?”
I said “Yes dad.”
Dad said, “Ok how about we just park here and run…”
I said “that will add another mile on.”
Dad said, “that’s okay.”
****Now I am mentally preparing myself for five miles.
Dad “how about we run for an hour?”
***In my mind… that is going to be over six miles… I signed up for four.
I said, “Ok dad.”
Dad said, “If we are lucky we will get six miles in.”
I am thinking, you’re right dad.
Dad “how about we just run a 10K?”
There it was… what he really wanted me to do this morning. It just takes him a min to figure out what he is ready for. After 6.2 miles we were both happy campers on our way home!
*** Good thing I have learned if it is a nice morning we will be running at least 2 miles longer than planned.
xoxo,
Emo
